Strange packaging for this whole series of noodles. Wai Wai Tom Yum Shrimp Flavor Quick Formula noodles definitely grabbed my attention with the cartoon character on the front of the package. This one has what appears to be a pouting girl on the front. Maybe she’s mad because I took her noodles? I don’t really know but let’s get on with the review. The package also shows shrimp, limes, mushrooms, limes leaves, chilies and coriander.
The package I bought was a smaller package but they offer the same flavor in a larger package. Therefore the noodle brick was on the smaller side. It came with a sachet of oil and seasoning powder.
Please take note of the noodle block as it has an almost orange or red color, this is because Thai ramen companies generally season the noodles themselves with chicken broth. You can really see a difference in the color of the noodles.
I dumped everything in the bowl and let it steep per instructions. When I took the first taste I could identify all of the ingredients I saw on the front except for the coriander. The shrimp flavor came through strong and clear without being too fishy. Very nice Wai Wai, very nice. It was sour, a little spicy and one very nice bowl of ramen. Apparently the girl on the front will have cause for more pouting as I will partake in these noodles in the very near future.
Did I mention the oil? The oil adds a very nice texture to the noodles and you can see it floating on the surface. The oil and the very thin and flavorful noodles made for a nice combination.
7 out of 10
Consistency – Nice consistency, slightly oily
Spiciness – These are a little spicy but just enough to make them tasty not put you into the hospital
Ingredients – A package of oil came with these and a package of powdered flavoring
Noodles – The noodles were small, tasty and after they were steeped chewy. The noodles are very thin but that just added to the overall enjoyment of them. The taste as mentioned before is primarily do to them being flavored.
