Tao Kae Noi is a brand that I have been familiar with for quite a while now. They make some simply delicious seaweed snacks. The flavoring and crispiness of their seaweed is top notch. Tourists flock to Tao Kae Noi Land stores while in Thailand to stock up on their favorite snacks. I was surprised to find they make ramen as well. Tao Kae Noi produces two different flavors and in this review I’ll be sampling Tao Kae Noi Creamy Tom Yum Kung.
Contents
The packaging is a bit higher quality than a lot of instant noodles in that the plastic just feels a little thicker. Inside I found a package of paste and seasoning powder connected and something that truly makes this a Tao Kae Noi worthy ramen. Tao Kae Noi included a sachet of their signature seaweed!
Noodles
The noodle brick was a different size that I think any other ramen I’ve eaten. It was between a large Korean noodle brick and a smaller Thai ramen brick. The noodles themselves we white like a Korean instant noodle would be and the thickness of the noodle was similar to a Korean noodle as well. They didn’t appear to be flavored like many Thai noodles as well.
Paste
The small dab of paste was dark red and oily .
Seasoning Powder
The seasoning powder was plentiful and had a white powder in it.
Ruling
Tao Kae Noi Creamy Tom Yum Kung noodles have a strong resemblance to Korean noodles. The chewiness is very similar and the texture is as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they were imported but the package says “Product of Thailand” so who am I to argue?
Creamy these noodles are not! The white powder did not produce creaminess but the red paste did produce something that whispered tomato to my taste buds. They are midly spicy and the flavor is overall balanced. They are sour with a bit of sweetness to them which is as it should be.
The seaweed is where these shine though. Tao Kae Noi makes some good seaweed and they of course added some of that to the package. The seaweed it not of the snack variety and if it’s seasoned it would be something mild but for a bowl of soup it was just perfect.
